We’ve been enjoying working back in Orkney for The Stromness Development Trust developing proposals for the Stromness Community Centre.
There has been a church present on the site since 1718 with the current building constructed in 1814 and later converted to a youth centre in the 1960s. Over the years some of the key features of the building have been lost and several alterations have also been made. Together with The Trust, Aquatera and Orkney Surveying Services we’ve developed proposals for a renewed centre concentrating on reinforcing existing connections in the town and retaining the importance of the hall while ensuring new community focussed facilities create an accessible space for everyone to enjoy.
Development of the centre has been specifically identified in the recent “What’s Next for Stromness?”/Stromness Local Place Plan and is currently owned by Orkney Islands Council but listed as part of their Asset Disposal Scheme. Overall, the project aims to assist The Stromness Community Development Trust in better understanding the potential for future development of the Stromness Community Centre with a view to the Trust’s potential acquisition of the building. The aim of this is to improve the services available to the community from the Centre and to provide an income generating facility for the Trust.
